Prior to games, Hugh worked in commercial software development in both project management and executive roles. He joined Electronic Arts as Development Director on Madden NFL 2001. There he directed the PS2’s most successful US launch title and followed with NCAA Football 2002. He then accepted the role of VP of Development for 2015, Inc., creators of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Next he advanced to the role of Studio Head for Midway San Diego and later Executive Producer at Nival Interactive (known for Heroes of Might and Magic).

In his current role as President and Executive Producer at Darkside Game Studios, Hugh has helped grow the studio from less than a dozen people to over 40 while working on AAA console and PC titles such as Bioshock 2 and Civilization Revolution. Darkside now handles full development on multiple games including DLC 4 in Gearbox Software’s Borderlands series: Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution. Darkside is currently working on an undisclosed AAA console and PC title for 2K Games.

2. AARON THIBAULT

  •  Vice President of Product Development – Gearbox Software

LOCATED IN PLANO, TX, WHERE HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PRODUCTION AND RESOURCING OF ALL PROJECTS. HE HAS EXPERIENCE IN ENTERTAINMENT PRODUCTION, MILITARY R&D, AND ACADEMIA. HE WAS DEPUTY DIRECTOR AND SENIOR LECTURER AT SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY’S GUILDHALL GRADUATE PROGRAM IN VIDEOGAME ARTS AND SCIENCES, CREATED A MULTIDISCIPLINARY VIDEOGAME R&D PROGRAM AT UT-AUSTIN’S IC2 INSTITUTE, AND IS CURRENTLY AN ADJUNCT LECTURER TEACHING A CAPSTONE COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSE AT BAYLOR UNIVERSITY.

AARON LED THE DIGITAL WARRIOR RESEARCH PROJECT SPONSORED BY THE ARMY RESEARCH LABS IN CONJUNCTION WITH ARMY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COMMAND, THE BATTLE COMMAND TRAINING CENTER AT FT. HOOD, AND THE ARMY MEDICAL DIVISIONS’S NCO ACADEMY. THIS MULTI-ECHELON PROJECT CREATED AND APPLIED NEW TECHNIQUES OF USING ARTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE ACROSS NETWORK BASED GAME SIMULATIONS TO IMPROVE HOW THE ARMY TRAINS MILITARY DECISION MAKING IN HIGH RISK, COMPLEX SCENARIOS.

HE STARTED IN GAMES AS A SOUND DESIGNER, CINEMATIC ANIMATOR AND EXTERNAL PRODUCER AT FAMED STUDIO ORIGIN SYSTEMS (ELECTRONIC ARTS), WHERE HE WORKED ON ULTIMA ONLINE, JANE’S F/A 18, AMERICAN MCGEE’S ALICE, SID MEIER’S ALPHA CENTAURI AND UO: LORD BLACKTHORN’S REVENGE (A CREATIVE COLLABORATION WITH SPAWN CREATOR TODD MCFARLANE).

3. BRIAN MARTEL

Is one of three owners and founders at Gearbox Software and is Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer at the company. Brian is a twenty year veteran in the interactive entertainment industry and is the most experienced game maker at Gearbox. As an Artist, Art Director, Art Czar, Game Director, Executive Producer, Co-Founder, and lastly the Studio’s Chief Creative Officer, Brian has been a driving force behind much of the studio’s success.

He comes from a long history of game development first with Microprose where he worked on Civilization. He then moved to Dallas to work at 3D Realms where he wore many art hats on Duke Nukem first hand at 3D Realms when high resolution 128 pixel sprites were king. Along with current co-owners of Gearbox, Randy Pitchford and Stephen Bahl, Brian Martel went off to help and start Gearbox Software after his tenure at 3D Realms.

Brian has worked in just about every aspect of artistic design, creation and implementation for digital entertainment in nearly every game genre. Brian has worked on a number of top selling AAA titles from Civilization, Half-Life: Opposing Force, Half-Life: Blue Shift, Half-Life, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, 007 James Bond: Nightfire, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3, Samba de Amigo, Halo: Combat Evolved, the Brothers in Arms series, and Borderlands.

Serving as Gearbox Software’s Chief Creative Officer, Brian is heavily involved with the art produced by the company in addition to inspiring design and creativity within the level builders. Brian was a huge visionary behind creating the Brothers in Arms franchise and helped to direct the massive art style change on Borderlands which resulted in a ground breaking new technique.
